Plaid Cymru

Plaid Cymru [ plaɪd kəmɾi ] (English: The Party of Wales, German: Party of Wales, mostly short: Plaid ) is a center -left party in Wales, which describes itself as a social democratic and Welsh nationalist. She is often referred to simply as Plaid. Chairman of the party 's Leanne Wood.

Party History

The party was founded on 5 August 1925 by members of the Byddin Ymreolwyr Cymru, a nationalist party in Northern Wales, and the Y Mudiad Cymreig, a nationalist underground movement in South Wales. At first she was Plaid Cymru Genedlaethol ( National Party of Wales), but left the middle part away soon.

The strongholds of Plaid Cymru are traditionally in the Welsh-speaking north. However, the first seat in the House of the party could win in 1966 in Carmarthen in the west. Since its founding, Plaid Cymru sat for more federalism. This concern was fulfilled in 1997 with the creation of the National Assembly for Wales. In this Plaid Cymru was initially the main opposition party. As Plaid Cymru gave up the demand for national independence for Wales in January 2000, a small group broke away and founded the party Annibynnol Cymru ( Wales Independent ).

Since 2007, Plaid Cymru was involved in the Welsh Assembly Government in a coalition government with Labour. The coalition agreement was entitled " One Wales ". 2011 suffered Plaid Cymru under Ieuan Wyn Jones a bitter defeat in the elections to National Assembly for Wales. With Leanne Wood since there is a trade unionist and socialist declared at the top of the party.

Plaid Cymru has close relations with the Scottish National Party. The party is a member of the European Free Alliance. In the European Parliament Plaid Cymru is involved in the Group of the Greens / European Free Alliance.
