Plainfaing

Plainfaing is a commune with 1803 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) in the department of Vosges in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Saint- Dié -des-Vosges, founded the Canton Fraize and the 1996 Local Government Association Haute Meurthe.

Geography

Plainfaing at the foot of the Col du Bonhomme at the upper Meurthe, 17 kilometers southeast of Saint- Dié -des-Vosges, the capital ( chef-lieu ) for the district of the same name. The eastern municipal boundary runs along the crest of the Vosges and also forms the border to the Alsace region. The Meurthe flows through the municipal area from the southeast to the northwest and takes several small mountain streams to ( Ruisseau de Cascade, Ruisseau du Louschbach ). The highest elevation in the municipal area of Plainfaing is the 1306 m high Gazon you Faing, several other mountains reach the 1,000 -meter mark, including the skin de walkways ( 1088 m ) west of the Meurthe. A 4 km ² large area in the southwest of the municipality lies above 1100 meters above sea level and is not wooded, here is 1988 the nature reserve Gazon you Faing Tanet with the typical high moorland flora.

The 38.56 km ² large municipality Plainfaings is two-thirds of forests ( Forêt de la Haute domaniale -Meurthe, Forêt de communale Fraize, Bois du Lesseux ), which extend up to the ridge line of the Vosges. In low-lying areas prevails pasture, an economic crop is due to the altitude no longer possible.

History

Plainfaing ( former spellings: Pleinfaing, Pleinfin ) originally belonged to spell Fraize.

In the 16th century due to a born Plainfaing canons of the cathedral in Saint- Dié -des-Vosges first chapel, which no longer exists today. Was founded in 1782 with the newly built Saint-Nicolas Church, the parish Plainfaing, which included the surrounding hamlets.

From the spell Fraize, which included many scattered hamlets, created in 1783, the municipalities Fraize and Plainfaing.

From the mid 19th century, it remained as in other valleys in the Vosges Plainfaing the textile industry feeder. As founder applies Geliot Nicolas (1805-1873), industrialist and mayor in Plainfaing. In 1905 was registered with 5300 the highest-ever number of inhabitants. In 1970, with the closure of all textile companies a long era to an end, resulting in a high unemployment and emigration meant. Plainfaing is located on the National Highway 415, which runs from Saint- Dié -des-Vosges over the near Col du Bonhomme and Colmar to Breisach am Rhein. From the Department of Plainfaing road 23 leads along the Meurthe upstream to the foot of the Col de la gorge.
