Plainfield is a town in Union County, New Jersey, USA with 47 829 inhabitants ( census 2000).

History

The area was settled in 1684 by Quakers, 1869 the company merged into a city. Formerly a bedroom community in the greater New York, Plainfield became the center of ten closely connected communities with a variety of business sectors, as pressure chemistry, clothing, electronics and auto parts suppliers.

Among the various, from the 18th century remaining buildings are a Quaker meetinghouse (1788 ), the Martine house ( 1717) and the Nathaniel Drake House ( 1746 ), known as George Washington's headquarters. The Washington rock nearby over the Hudson River is considered the lookout, Washington watched the British troop movements from which.

Music History Plainfield is known as the birthplace of the genre P-Funk. George Clinton founded The Parliaments at the time when he was working in a barber shop in Plainfield.

According to the census of 2000, there are 47,829 people, 15,137 households, and 10,898 families residing in the city. The population density is 3057.4 persons per km ². 21.45% of the population is White, 61.78 % African American, 0.41 % Native American, 0.93 % Asian, 0.10 % Pacific Islander, 10.78 % from other races, and 4.55% mixed race. 25.16 % are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 15,137 households 35.5% have children under 18 years. 39.3 % are married couples living together, 24.5% are single mothers, 28.0% are non-families, 21.1% consist of all households and 7.4% in people older than 65, the average household size is 3, 10, the average family size is 3.49.

27.5 % are under the age of 18, 10.2 % from 18 to 24, 32.6 % from 25 to 44, 20.5% between 45 and 64, 9.2% older than 65, the average age of 33 years. The ratio of women to men is 100:95,7, for people older than 18 years, the ratio 100:92,2.

The median household income is $ 46,683, and the median income for a family $ 50,774. Males have a median income of $ 33,460, women $ 30,408. The per capita income for the city is $ 19,052. 15.9 % of the population and 12.2% of families are below the poverty line, including 21.3 % have children younger than 18 years and 12.6 % of people older than 65
