Plan of Ayala

The Plan de Ayala was the political program of Emiliano Zapata and his followers ( the Zapatistas ) in the context of the Mexican Revolution.

The text was signed on 25 November 1911 in Ayoxustla in the state of Puebla and proclaimed on November 28, 1911 in Ayala City, the municipality in which the place of birth was Zapata. It was formulated with the help of the teacher Otilio Montaño Sánchez, who was also Zapata's mentor. The plan calls for the weapons to distribute the land to the peasants, which it has actually been heard and rescued only by the present owners. It culminates in the exclamation Libertad, Justicia y Ley! ( Freedom, justice and the law!), Who later on what is now known and quoted version of Tierra y Libertad! ( Country and Liberty! ) Has been shortened and modified.

The main points of the plan were:

  • Francisco Madero's resignation as president and free elections as soon as the country has calmed down.
  • Pascual Orozco's appointment as leader of the revolution and Emiliano Zapata to his representative.
  • Distribution of land to the peasants and ejidos ( communally owned land, much of the local commons ).
  • Emphasis on the rural character of the Mexican Revolution.

Pascual Orozco joined in 1912 the Plan de Ayala on.

On June 19, 1914 some of the wording of the plan have been revised.
