Plancher -les -Mines is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Plancher -les -Mines is located at an altitude of 496 m above sea level, about 17 km north- northwest of the town of Belfort ( a straight line ). The village is located in the extreme east of the department, in the valley of the Rahin, in the southern Vosges between the heights of Belfahy the west and the Planche des Belles Filles in the east.

The area of ​​25.59 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the landscape in the southern Vosges. The main part of the area is occupied by the valley of the Rahin that is initially cut deep in the Vosges ridges and to open only when Plancher -les -Mines begins. History

The place name derives from the French word planche, which is to be translated to German with board, plank, in the importance of small wooden footbridge ( from a watercourse ). In the Middle Ages Plancher -les -Mines belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont.
