Planet of the Apes (novel)

The Planet of the Apes ( original title: La Planète the singes ) is a French novel, which was written in 1963 by Pierre Boulle.

Action

Phyllis and Jinn place during an interstellar travel a letter in a bottle and read this. It is a report that describes the journey of Ulysse Mérou and his companions. This and other astronauts to fly at near-light speed for Betelgeuse and found there a planet very similar to Earth, and decide why ( Latin for " sister " ) to call him Soror. They decide to land on this to explore it.

The air of the planet is tolerable. As they explore the area, you will find both a river and footprints. Apparently it is the footsteps of a woman who they encounter later. The next day the "savages" loot all their stuff and bring it to a clearing. Another day that is what matters in this clearing to unrest. Suddenly, great apes are emerging that are dressed like men and behave like that. They appear to be human hunters and bring lots of dumb people around. Also Levain, dies a friend of Mérou, and Antelle, his other companion, he loses sight of.

Mérou itself is captured and locked in a cage. He believed that the people of this planet probably have tamed the monkey to make them civilized creatures. But apparently now the monkeys are the rulers of this world. They have a technology which is similar to our built in 1950. People are animals and be treated as such. The monkeys bring him to a place where the people are examined, and notice that he seems to be far more intelligent than the others.

The chief of station is a zoologist named Zira. She and her husband Cornélius are both chimpanzees and are very interested in him. Mérou shows to be very intelligent, thus proving that he is not an animal, but a thinking being. Then he becomes famous among the monkeys. Zira and Cornélius decide to help Mérou, Nova and the baby. You manage to reach the spaceship from Antelle and then to fly with it to the earth. But when they land, they are shocked.

Ironically, the earth has taken the same path as Soror and is now also ruled by intelligent apes. Mérou leaves his home planet again and leaves a report in which his journey is described. At the end of the novel turns out that the two travelers, Phyllis and Jinn, chimpanzees are and do not believe a single word of the report. Who would ever believe that people were once intelligent, thoughtful and able to develop a civilization and such a high technology?
