Planica

Planica [ planitsa ] ( German Ratschach mats ) is a district of Rateče and the name of a valley in northwestern Slovenia, extending from Rateče from south, not far from the famous resort of Kranjska Gora. Further south, the valley is Tamar, which is accessible in three quarters of an hour hike from the parking lot Planica and serves as a starting point for mountain tours in the Triglav National Park.

Planica is famous for its ski jumping and ski flying hills, and is therefore also called the "Valley of the hills ". The first ski jumping hill was constructed before 1930 at the Ponca mountain. 1934 constructed Stanko Bloudek a larger jump, the Bloudkova Velikanka. The first ski jump over 100 meters was achieved here in 1936 by the Austrian Sepp Bradl. In 1969, the Letalnica Bratov Gorišek, the largest long time and currently the second largest ski flying hill in the world, constructed by Lado and Janez Gorišek.

Planica bidding to host the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2019; when applying for the World Cup in 2017 they were eliminated in the first round of voting.
