Planktothrix
Planktothrix rubescens
Planktothrix is a genus of filamentous cyanobacteria or " blue-green algae ." Type species of the genus Planktothrix agardhii is ( Gomont ) Anagnostidis & Komárek. Derived from the Greek name means free "in the water umherirrendes hair." In 2002, the genus of S. Suda was rearranged, individual species of the genus Oscillatoria were previously assigned.
Features
Planktothrix growing, as for the typical Oscillatoriales in long unbranched hyphae, also known as filaments. Within the genus neither akinete still heterocysts are formed. The filaments are less mobile and show phototaxis.
Ecology
Species of this genus usually live in the plankton and then have gas vesicles in order to einzuschichten within the water column. Some of these species, such as the Burgundy blood, can pose a threat to aquatic life and affect the drinking water supply after massive proliferation because they contain toxins.
