Plantation (Maine)

As Plantation is known in the U.S. state of Maine a territory ( so an unincorporated area or Unorganized Territory ) and Town lies between Township. The term is used in this sense only in Maine.

A Plantation is essentially a formerly unincorporated township that the government has granted a limited self-government, which is similar to that of a Town, but simplified in comparison. Plantations are found primarily in the sparsely populated areas of the state.

No other New England state has a equal to the Plantations of Maine administrative form today. In colonial times, the term has also been used in Massachusetts, and that for a settlement that was not a city. Since Maine was once a part of Massachusetts, the designation of this type of settlement seems to be descended. Since the 18th century, the name in Massachusetts has largely disappeared. Also in Rhode Iceland, the term Plantation became the colonial period used can be seen in the official state name Rhode Iceland and Providence Plantations as today.
