Plasencia

Plasencia [ plasenθja ] is a Spanish city in the autonomous region of Extremadura.

Geography

The city with 41 047 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013) is located on an area of ​​approximately 218 km ² in the province of Cáceres on the river Rio Jerte.

History

On the ruins of a Celtic settlement by the Roman emperors erected already a garrison. Exact year figures are not currently available. During the Reconquista from the 10th century, the city was founded in 1186 by Alfonso VIII, after he freed them from the Moors. The tide of war surged back and forth, until the city finally fell into Christian rule on July 16, 1212 at the famous Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa.

Already in 1189 the city after one of the many re-conquest by Pope Clement III was. the Episcopal center, followed started directly with the construction of a Romanesque cathedral. The construction lasted until the 18th century, so that the cathedral was also plenty of gothic features.
