Plastiras Dam

The Plastira Reservoir ( Greek τεχνητή λίμνη Πλαστήρα ), is an artificial lake in Greece. The reservoir is located in Thessaly and is located in the Regional District of Karditsa. The area covers 22.180 km ², the North-South dimension ( length) is 13.760 km and the maximum width of 4.330 km. The reservoir is exploited primarily for water storage and for generating electrical energy. Today, the reservoir but also touristy used ( beaches and boating ), the strongly fluctuating water levels complicates these efforts.

Dam

The dam is located at the southern end of the lake. It was built from 1958 to 1962, it is - just as the lake itself - after the Greek Prime Minister Nikolaos Plastiras named. The dam of Plastira dam is 83 m high and 200m wide. Over the wall crown performs a single-track, free befahrbahre road ( oncoming traffic area with traffic control).

Geographical location

The surrounding landscape of the lake is divided into two different characters. The southern section in the immediate vicinity of the dam gives the prevailing narrow valley landscape, a fjord-like appearance. In the northern part of the lake basin, however, the shore falls flat towards the water from, the landscape appears extensive. The lake is bounded on the west by the foothills of the Pindus Mountains, in the east, the landscape falls behind a range of hills in a distinctive terrain level from the plain of Thessaly. The lake is fed by many smaller tributaries that flow located in the west of the lake Pindos Mountains. From the lake, the river Tavropos, which in turn forms a tributary of the Kremasta reservoir occurs.

Colonization

Directly on the shore of the reservoir there is naturally no historical settlements, only at the village Kalibia there is a side road to the lake shore with beaches and a few newly constructed buildings. Around the lake there is a ring road that opens up all the places in the vicinity of the lake. Larger towns are Morfovouni and Keraséa in the north of the lake, and Kalibia Neohori in the west and maroon in the south. In addition to the villages, there are two monasteries in the vicinity of the lake, the corona monastery in the east of the lake at Morfovouni and Pelikitiskloster in the West. The latter is situated high above the lake with a view of the southern part of the lake. Both monasteries are on a tarmac road.
