Pļaviņas

Pļaviņas ( German: Stockmannshof ) is a city in the east of Latvia, located on the right bank of the Daugava river and at the mouth of the river Aiviekste.

History

On two hilltop castles, traces of settlement have been found from the 3rd millennium BC. In the early 17th century, it was a war camp of the Swedes during the Polish- Swedish War.

The town developed around the estate Stockmannshof as well as a railway station on the line Riga - Daugavpils. 1902 was a glass factory and a Steinschmelzerei, both of which were destroyed in the First World War.

1927 Pļaviņas received city rights. In 1956, the neighboring Gostini was incorporated.
