Pleuger rudder

An active rowing is a special form of rowing. Here a small boat propeller is installed on the rudder area, who navigated the ship even at low speeds, when the effect of the rudder area is low in the desired direction. Since then, however, more and more ships have installed a bow thruster, this type of rudder is hardly any use.

The active rudder was invented about 1952 by F. W. Pleuger (former company Pleuger Unterwasserpumpen GmbH, Hamburg, today Flowserve Hamburg GmbH). To drive a water-filled electric motor was used. As a further development of the pod drive was in 1955 by F. W. Pleuger invented and patented, but then his time was too far ahead and succeeds in the ship only since 1990.
