Pocahontas County (West Virginia)

Pocahontas County is a county located in the state of West Virginia in the United States. In the 2000 census, the county had 9,131 inhabitants and a population density of four people per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Marlinton.

Geography

The County is located in eastern West Virginia, bordering Virginia, and has an area of ​​2439 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers of water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Randolph County, Pendleton County, Highland County ( Virginia), Bath County (Virginia), Greenbrier County and Webster County.

History

Pocahontas County was formed on December 21, 1821 from parts of Pendleton County, Randolph County and Bath County ( Virginia). It was named after Pocahontas, the daughter of the Indian chief Powhatan sachem who is recognized as one of the British royal family has been received "Indian Princess " and ambassador of her " royal " father Powhatan at court.
