Podgora, Split-Dalmatia County

Podgora is a seaside resort on the Makarska Riviera in Croatia and center of the homonymous municipality. The village has 2,518 and 1,268 people in the village Podgora ( 2011 census ). The municipality also includes Drašnice, Igrane, Gornje Igrane and Živogošće.

Geography

Podgora located nine kilometers southeast of Makarska between the sea and the Adriatic highway. On the outskirts, the land rises steeply to the mountain Biokovo. On the slopes, there are some resort's own hamlet. Behind the headland Council Sv. Tekla is the district Čaklje.

History

Podgora was first mentioned in 1571 after the Battle of Lepanto, as a result fell 30 coastal towns to Venice. The inhabitants Podgoras were living in fear of pirates still on the slopes of Biokovo and not on the coast. During the brief rule of the French from 1805 to 1814 the area was opened up by the construction of roads. 1942 was situated in the old port of Podgora the first Marine Division of the Yugoslav People's Liberation Army, consisting of two ships. Because today is reminiscent of the monumental monument Galebova Krila ( German gull wing ), which was unveiled on the 20th anniversary of this event. Only after the devastating earthquake of 1962, which caused a lot of damage, most of the residents moved directly to the sea.

Economy

The main industry is tourism today. First tourists visited Podgora before 1910. The first hotel was opened in 1922. Podgora has about 6,000 beds in hotels, apartments and pensions. The main attraction is the four- kilometer-long beach feinkieselige.

Also worth mentioning are the fishing, olive groves and vineyards, and grazing economy.

Traffic

Podgora is located on the Adriatic Highway ( State Road D8), 70 km from Split and 140 km from Dubrovnik. A regional road ( Ž6198 ) leads to the state road D512 between Makarska and Ravča. Even in the municipality is the regional road Ž6199 connecting the D512 with the D62.

The port of Podgora was built in 1994. Together with the port also renewed the district Čaklje Podgora has 360 berths for boats and yachts. The nearest airport is the Airport Split - Kastela.
