Podolia Governorate

The government of Podolia (Russian Подольская губерния / Podolskaya Gubernija ) was in the southwest of the Russian Empire in the General Kiev and was bordered by the provinces of Volhynia, Kiev, Kherson, and Bessarabia, as well as the Austrian crown lands of Galicia and Bukovina. Nowadays it belongs almost entirely to the Ukraine ( Vinnytsia Oblast and especially Khmelnytskyi Oblast ), only a few corner north of the Dniester belong to Moldova ( Transnistria).

The government consisted of 42,017 km ². Capital was Kamenetz -Podolsky ( Ukr Kamjanez - Podilskyj ), from 1914 Vinnitsa ( Ukr Vinnytsia ). It was in twelve counties ( Ujesdy ) divided:

The area was at the Polish partitions of 1793 and 1795, the Russian Empire, the province was formed in 1796 from parts of the provinces of Podolia and Braclaw. As an administrative unit, it existed until 1925.

Statistics

The government had 1897 3.018.299 inhabitants, of whom 2,442,819 Ukrainians, Russians, 98 984, 369 306 Jews, 69 156 Poland, 26,764 Romanians and Moldovans and 4,069 German.

Main industry was agriculture. From the area of arable land accounted for 63.5 %, to 14.7% forest, meadows 17% and Unland 4.8%. The harvest yielded 1884: 3 million hectoliters of rye, 3 million hectoliters of wheat, 4 million hl oats, 1 ½ million hectoliters of barley, 1 million hectoliters of corn, 1 million hectoliters of potatoes; Buckwheat, peas, millet in low proportions. Also, melons, wine and tobacco were recovered. They counted 1883 677 580 head of cattle, 807 458 sheep, 448 597 horses, 519 515 pigs, 17,912 goats. Was famous for his oxen Podolia.

The value of industrial production in 1884 was 48.911 million rubles given to; they took place in 1616 factories with 24,083 workers.
