Podophyllin

Podopyhllin is a hygroscopic powder which is extracted from the roots of the genus foot blade ( syn.: Mayapple ) Podophyllum peltatum with the types and Podophyllum hexandrum from the family of the barberry family ( Berberidaceae ) is obtained.

The drug contains Peltain, the biologically inactive Pikropodophyllin and the spindle inhibitor podophyllotoxin, which is also used as cytostatic application

Earlier still in "natural" laxatives ( laxatives ) exist, a use in this indication is no longer allowed today. Also for the treatment of genital warts, it should no longer be used because anecdotal reports to speculation about the occasional malignant transformation of genital warts in connection with the introduction of podophyllin therapy in the 40s giving occasion.
