Poephila

Belt Grass Finch ( P. cincta )

The grass finches ( Poephila ) are a genus of the family of finches. The species of this genus live all in northern Australia.

System

Since the Gürtelamadine and Spitzschwanzamadine have a largely coincident revenge drawing with Zeresfinken and Binsenastrild, they are assigned to the subgenus Poephila. The Maskenamadine has a matching revenge drawing and similar vocalizations such as the zebra finch. It is therefore assigned to the subgenus Neopoephila.

Dissemination

Maskenamadine and Spitzschwanzamadine inhabit much like the Gouldian the open eucalypt forests and savannas and arid steppes of Australia. The proximity to water points is wanted always. In contrast, the belt grass finch inhabits humid savanna areas with a denser grass and tree growth. All three species are very social animals that breed in close proximity to each other and exhibit a pronounced social behavior, which, among other extensive mutual plumage crawl heard.
