Background knowledge about the author or the circumstances of the time of the work plays best as a corrective to a role; However, it is not considered to be constitutive for successful interpretation.
- Effects-based approaches: they either make the reception historical experience of the work to the starting point of interpretation or bring the variety of possible interpretations aesthetic reception at the center.
- Inductive approach goes from the smallest observations and extended gradually to the whole
