Poggiardo

Poggiardo is a Southeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 6081 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Lecce in Puglia. The municipality is situated approximately 35 km south-southeast of Lecce in Salento. The Adriatic Sea is about 8 km to the southeast. The church has the title of Città (City).

History

The Messapians settled in the district Vaste ( historically: Bastae ), which still goes back to this period of the 7th century. In 1147 the place is destroyed by William of Sicily.

Traffic

Poggiardo is a railway station on the route from Maglie after Gagliano del Capo. Passing through the municipality, the former State Road 497 Maglie di e di Santa Cesarea Terme (now the provincial road 363).
