Poggibonsi

Poggibonsi ( alttosk. Poggibonizzi ) is a town with 29 216 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in Tuscany ( Italy). It is located in the province of Siena, in the Chianti region between Florence and Siena.

Geography

The city covers 70 km ². It is located 35 km south of the regional capital Florence and 23 km northwest of the provincial capital, Siena on the northern border of the two provinces ( province of Siena and Florence ) in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, GR 1984 / G. Through the town, the rivers flow Elsa (11 km) and Staggia (15 km), which unite here. Poggibonsi is in the territory of the Elsa Valley (Val d' Elsa) and extends to the foothills of the Chianti hills where the vineyards and agriculture are very common. In addition, it is located on the Via Francigena.

For the urban area include the districts of Bellavista, Mocarello, Staggia Senese, Lecchi di Staggia and Talciona.

The neighboring municipalities are Barberino Val d' Elsa ( FI), Castellina in Chianti, Colle di Val d' Elsa, Monteriggioni and San Gimignano.

History

From the geological point of view, the area of ​​Poggibonsi has been newly formed in the Tertiary, and especially in the Pliocene. The first finds a human presence are from prehistoric times Neolithic. The most important but go back to the time of the Etruscans and Romans, as are the numerous small, scattered before the village necropolis testify near the Colli towards the north and north -east, from which, among other things, the most extensive amount of Attic pottery of the whole Val d' Elsa comes.

Many place names have their origins in the distant past, such as Talciona where Marturi ( Maris ) is the Etruscan name for Mars or Mars - Turan. The names of Luco, Megognano, Gavignano Cedda, Cinciano, Sornano and Gaggiano are of Roman origin. The same origin have many street names.

Economy and Transport

The place is an important industrial center, furniture, vases and glasses are produced in its environment. In addition, a strong construction industry exists. Poggibonsi has two connection points to the RA3, a highway from Siena to Florence and is located on the historic Via Francigena.
