Pohang

Pohang is a city in South Korea with 516 105 inhabitants. It lies on the coast of the Japan Sea in the province of Gyeongsangbuk -do in the east of the country. The city has a port and trunk roads or rail network connected to the capital, Seoul. It is located about three hours away from Seoul. Nearest international sea port is Busan. One of the world's leading steel producers, the Pohang Iron and Steel Company ( POSCO ), has its headquarters in the city. The city is also home to the K-League football club Pohang Steelers.

Geography

The city is divided by the River Hyeongsan and lies at the mouth. West of the river, there is a residential and commercial development of predominantly smaller buildings. These neighborhoods are crisscrossed by a dense road network. East of the river dominates the industrial development that arose in connection with the construction of the steel plant after 1972. This part of the city consists of large factory action and warehouses. The natural boundary of the city in the east, west and south form forested hills and mountains.

Economy

Although there were in the region around Pohang since about 1500 BC, small fishing villages, urbanization did not start until around 1930, when the port facilities were built. POSCO began in 1972 with the establishment of a large steel plant. The steel industry is still one of the most important economic activities in the city. Efforts to less reliance on heavy industry have aroused the interest of protecting the environment and the culture Pohang.

In Pohang is the world-renowned University of Science and Technology Pohang.
