Point-to-Point Protocol over ATM

PPPoA is a transmission technique in data networks and is available for PPP over ATM or PPP over AAL5.

PPP is thereby directly packed into ATM cells. Compared to PPP over Ethernet ( PPPoE) is accounted for the Ethernet frame, which reduces overhead and a higher connection speed is achieved. PPPoA is used in ADSL connections based on ATM.

ADSL connection via PPTP PPPoA

In some countries (including in Austria ) is used for ADSL connections - instead of the more common PPPoE - a combination of PPTP and PPPoA used. Here, a small Ethernet LAN between ADSL modem and computer is first set up. As part of the ADSL dial-up, the computer establishes a PPTP connection to the modem within this LANs. This does not, however, assumes the function of a PPTP server, but be transformed by means of a so-called PPPoA -to- PPTP Relay PPTP data packets in PPPoA data packets and forwards them over the phone line to the provider on. In the opposite direction arriving PPPoA packets in PPTP data packets are converted and forwarded to the computer. In this way, a PPP connection between the computer and provider.
