Polignano a Mare

Polignano a Mare is a southern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 17.621 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) in the province of Bari, in Puglia. The place is right on the Adriatic Sea, about 33 kilometers southeast of Bari.

In the district of San Vito is a large monastery of the Benedictines.

History

The place was already inhabited in early times. Later, the Greeks founded probably in this place in Puglia, the city of Neapolis (not to be confused with the Neapolis in Campania, modern Naples ). You might in any case between the ancient Barium (Bari ) and gnathia (or Egnatia, today Fasano ) have located. From the Roman times, a bridge of a branch of the Via Traiana is obtained; Polignano was a significant change station to the seaport at Brundisium (modern Brindisi).

Economy and Transport
