Polirone Abbey

San Benedetto in Polirone is a Benedictine monastery in San Benedetto Po in the province Mantova and the Lombardia region.

The Monastery of San Benedetto in Polirone was founded in 1007 by Tedaldo di Canossa on an island, which at that time formed the Po river here; now one of the branches of the river is drained. Due to the generous donations that made especially Tedaldos son Boniface of Canossa and his daughter Matilda of Tuscany, the monastery soon became one of the richest in Italy.

Mathilde bequeathed in 1077 to the Pope, the abbey church, which they later the jurisdiction of the Cluny Abbey imputed, had himself buried here in 1115 (her body was in 1632 transferred to St. Peter's Basilica in Rome ).

The abbey church was rebuilt mid-15th century and restored in 1540-1544 by Giulio Romano. Other artists who have worked here are Antonio da Correggio Antonio and Begarelli.
