Polish Academy of Learning

Polska Akademia Umiejętności ( PAU, formerly " Akademia Umiejętności " (AU) - German " Polish Academy of learning " ) is a scientific society, headquartered in Krakow and about 500 members at home and abroad ( as of 2006).

1872, existing since 1815 Kraków Scientific Society ( Towarzystwo Naukowe Krakowskie ) in the Akademia Umiejętności ( Academy of knowledge) was converted. After the First World War, it was renamed in Polska Akademia Umiejętności and remained independent of the State Society, which represented the Polish science international ( International about in founding the Union Académique ). The activities of the Academy focused from the outset on sponsorship of science and scientists, but it was especially as the editor of demanding scientific works (such as Polski Słownik Biograficzny ) known. With the onset of World War II in 1939, the Academy stopped her work and took her back to 1945. 1952 its subsidiaries and assets were transferred to Warsaw by virtue of a government decision Polska Akademia Nauk by the State. The PAU itself was not resolved, so that they could reactivate their structures and offices in 1989 immediately after the end of communism. In June 2006, the PAU was one of 486 members of which 176 abroad. Its honorary members belonged to John Paul II
