Polk County (Tennessee)

Polk County is a county located in the state of Tennessee in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Benton.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme southeast of Tennessee, on the east by North Carolina, south to Georgia and has an area of 1146 square kilometers, of which 19 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Monroe County, Cherokee County ( North Carolina), Fannin County ( Georgia), Murray County ( Georgia), Bradley County and McMinn County. The Cherokee National Forest extends partially into the Polk County.

History

Polk County was formed on November 28, 1839, from parts of Bradley County and McMinn County. It was named after James K. Polk, the eleventh president of the United States.

Previously, he served as Governor of the State of Tennessee ( 1839-1841 ) and Speaker of the House ( 1835-1839 ). Polk was a member of the Democratic Party.
