Polkagris

Polkagrisar ( Swedish for polka pigs ) are candies in the shape of candy canes, which are considered specialty cuisine of Sweden.

Amalia Erikson, a 25 -year-old widow from Gränna, 1859 received permission to open a bakery there and also to produce candy canes. Where did she get the recipe is unclear. Gränna has remained the center of production for Polkagrisar and you can follow the production on a visit to one of the many workshops.

The traditional candy canes are striped red and white and have a peppermint flavor.

The name probably comes from the Polkagrisar dance polka, which spread at that time all over Europe. Every year in June in Gränna held a dance party in which even competitions in Polka Dancing occur.
