Pollica

Castellabate is a town with 2400 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Salerno in the Campania region

Geography

Castellabate is situated 133 km southeast of Naples, 208 km north- west of Cosenza, 79 km south of Salerno. It is located in the hilly, heavily forested region of Cilento and is since 1991 part of the National Park of Cilento and Vallo di Diano. The village is about 5 km from the coast. The districts and resorts Acciaroli and Pioppi are right on the coast and are members of the Costiera Cilentana. Both beaches have been awarded the Blue Flag. The districts Cannicchio, Celso and Galdo lie inland. The municipality covers an altitude 0-1100 m slm from the Tyrrhenian Sea to the Monte Stella.

The municipality is located in the seismic zone 3 (slightly endangered).

The municipality is a member of Cittaslow, a company incorporated in Italy in 1999 motion to decelerate and increase the quality of life in cities by environmental policy, infrastructure policy, urban quality, appreciation of indigenous products, hospitality, awareness and scenic quality.

The neighboring municipalities are Cannalonga, Castelnuovo Cilento, Ceraso, Gioi, Moio della Civitella, Novi Velia and Salento.

Traffic

Castellabate is accessed by the coastal road, the strada stadale SS 267 Strada del Cilento. The nearest motorway exit is in Battipaglia on the A3 Autostrada del Sole in 69 km distance.

The nearest train station Vallo della Lucania - Castelnuovo Cilento on the railway line Tirrenica Meridional is located in 14 km distance.

History

Castellabate arose in the 8th century, just north of the present-day village. Until 1410 it belonged to the monastery of the Trinity in Cava de ' Tirreni that made the place at its present location to build. Since the 18th century it was known as the Principality owned by the Capano family.

Policy

Angelo Vassallo (PD ) was elected in March 2010 for the fourth time as mayor. Vassallo was shot on September 6, 2010 by unknown on the ride home in his car. There is a connection with his involvement against the Camorra suspects.

Attractions

  • The Castello dei Principi Capano goes back to the 13th century and is since 1997 the community.
