Polling Abbey

The monastery Polling is a former Benedictine and later Augustinian Canons in Polling in Upper Bavaria.

History

It was probably only the legend of Duke Tassilo III. founded by Bavaria to 750, probably was the founder members of the Huosi, a local noble family. The monastery polling played a leading role in the financing of Gaden Monastery, built of stone in the years 1745-1754 Wies Church.

Originally the Benedictines attributed monastery was to expropriations under Arnulf I of Bavaria suffered and was badly damaged in the wars of Hungary. From 1010 Canons Regular lived again in Polling, who lived after the beginning of the 12th century according to the rules of Augustine. A new church was built and consecrated in 1160 by the Bishop of Brixen. The church burned down in the early 15th century and was rebuilt in 1416-1420 in the Gothic style. Provost John tinsmith was in his working life from 1499 to 1523, the Prefecture, the refectory and the library building, the church was designed in late Gothic style. 1714 began the construction of the monastery, from 1721, the convent school was enlarged and there was henceforth the Jesuits worked according to the curriculum. Eusebius Amort (1692-1775) was one of the teachers, he was also the magazine " Parnassus Boicus " with articles on physics, chemistry, astronomy, meteorology, history and grammar out and one of the founders of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences later. One of his students was Franz Töpsl, which expand as provost in his working life from 1744 to 1796, the library and the church in Rococo style who converted. He cared for scientific cabinets and had an observatory built. The remains of this once more than 200 portraits comprehensive Canons Gallery ( Pinacoteca Pollinger ) are now in the possession of the archives of the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, for after an eventful history, the monastery was secularized in 1803.

The displaced monastery library contained 88,000 volumes, of which about 20,000 arrived in the Imperial Library in Munich and 7000 in the University Library Ingolstadt. The majority of the books was to waste. The buildings were largely discontinued in the years 1805-1807.

Current usage

The important late Gothic monastery church with early Baroque stucco work of Georg Wessobrunners Schmuzer is now a parish church. A part of the obtained monastery building came in 1892 in the possession of the Dominican Sisters of St. Ursula in Donauwörth, the -, interrupted by World War II - there until 1972 maintained a school. Pharmacist tract and farm buildings were transferred to private ownership.

The unique Pollinger library hall was restored from 1970-1975 and is eV above the Friends of the Library Pollinger hall to visit.

Today the surviving buildings of the monastery also a hospice is housed.
