History

Traces exhibit a settlement since the Neolithic period. Later here a Roman town in the province of Lusitania, such discoveries was, inter alia, occupied by coins. In addition, the Romans built a fort here, which was rebuilt after the Arab conquest of the Moors from 711.

During the Reconquista D.Afonso Henriques conquered the territory and gave it to the Knights Templar. Locally Choes they found in 1126 a small settlement today vanished before, and they built the Arab fortress 1128 new. The present town Pombal was repopulated in the course and is therefore regarded as founded by the Knights Templar Gualdim Pais. The town received city rights in 1174 first. 1509, King D.Manuel I. renew the fort and gave the place renewed 1512 city rights.

After he was deposed in 1777, the absolutist Prime Minister Marquês de Pombal let ( Eng.: the Marquis of Pombal ) to its local possessions down and ordered the lower town again. Thus, at the old square ( Praça Velha ), on which stood the old pillory, erected the prison building, and opposite the granary of the city. Other buildings and rearrangements followed the end of the 18th century, including a direct integration of the town center to the royal national road. During the Napoleonic invasions in the early 19th century Pombal suffered then looting and extensive damage by the French invading army, in consequence of which the city experienced a strong decline and remained almost deserted.

In the second half of the 20th century Pombal gained then regain the attention of management and economy, especially thanks to its central location. Since then the city experienced a steady growth. Sign of the resurrected city are the many town festivals, or even the Teatro Amador opened in 1976 that already went on national tour with different pieces.

The former small-town ( Vila ) Pombal became a town ( Cidade ) 1991.

Sports

The football club Sporting Clube de Pombal went in 1922 from the merger of two local football clubs Glória Football Club and Operário forth, and was the tenth branch of the club Sporting Clube de Portugal. It plays its home matches at the 3,000 -seat Municipal Stadium ( Estádio Municipal de Pombal ). The club played several times in the third division, the former II ª Divisão (now Campeonato Nacional de Seniores ), and Divisions of the district association occurs since 2013 (as of season 2013/14 ). Besides football, other sports are in the club still in operation, including swimming, karate and gymnastics.

Pombal is located on the main railway line in the country, the Linha do Norte.

The city is connected with own of the A1 and A34 motorway to the road network of the country. In addition, the IC2 connects the city with the about 30 km to the south district capital of Leiria and about 40 km north away Coimbra.

The public transport in the city is secured by three color distinct bus routes. The Linha Azul (blue line), Linha Verde ( Green Line) and Linha Vermelha the (red line) by the municipal transport company POMBUS - operated transportation Urbano de Pombal. A single ticket costs 0.70 euros, also 10 different cards and subscriptions are available (as of November 2013).
