Pompaples

Pompaples is a municipality in the district of Morges in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland. Due to its location on the watershed between the Mediterranean - North Sea Pompaples also called " Le milieu du Monde" ( " center of the world ").

Geography

Pompaples is located on 490 m above sea level. M., 1 km north of La Sarraz and 18 km north of the district capital Morges ( straight line ). The former street line village extends on both sides of Nozon, at the foot of the Jura Mountains, in the Vaud Mittelland.

The area of ​​4.5 km ² large municipality area includes a portion of the Vaud Mittelland. The southwestern part is in the range of the Jura plateau, in which the Nozon has dug a valley; here are the easily accessible climbing rocks of Saint- Loup. On the plateau north of the Nozontals is 583 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Pompaples. The southern boundary runs along a ridge which forms the watershed between the basins of the Rhine and the Rhone. To the northeast of the municipality extends over the sloping ground to Orbeebene slopes of the Jura plateau, broken by the little valley Orgevaux. Population

With 801 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012) Pompaples one of the smaller municipalities in the canton of Vaud. Of the 90.0 % inhabitants are French-speaking, 2.5 % and 2.4 % portugiesischsprachig in German (as of 2000). The population of Pompaples amounted in 1900 to 349 inhabitants. Since 1980 (544 inhabitants ) is a continuous increase in population was observed.

Economy

Pompaples until the 20th century, a predominantly coined by farming village. Today, the farming and fruit growing have only a minor role in the occupational structure of the population. Traffic

The community is easily accessible via. It lies on the main road 9 from Lausanne to Vallorbe. The highway connecting La Sarraz at the 1981 opened A1 (Lausanne -Yverdon ) is approximately 6 km from the town center. History

The first written mention of the village was carried out in 1049 under the name Pons Papuli. Later the names Pompaploz appeared ( in the 14th century) and Pompapuli ( late 15th century ). The etymology of the place name is disputed. The name comes either from the Latin pons ( bridge) and Papulus ( Geneva a bishop of the 6th century ) or also from the Latin word populus ( poplar).

Since the Middle Ages belonged to the rule Pompaples La Sarraz. With the conquest of Vaud by Bern in 1536, the village came under the administration of the Bailiwick Romainmôtier. After the collapse of the ancien régime Pompaples belonged from 1798 to 1803 during the Helvetic Republic to the canton of Geneva, who came up then with the enactment of the Act of Mediation in the canton of Vaud. 1798 was assigned to the District Cossonay.

Attractions

In the center some characteristic farmhouses from the 17th to 19th centuries have been preserved. Pompaples does not have its own church, it belongs to the parish of La Sarraz.

The house Moulin Bornu ( " au milieu du monde " ) has a pond, a flowing of the two drains into the North Sea, the other into the Mediterranean.
