Pompeiana

Pompeiana ( in Ligurian: Pumpiàna ) is a municipality with 837 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2012) in the northern Italian region of Liguria.

Geography

Pompeiana is about two kilometers from the Ligurian Sea and is situated on the south side of Monte Croce, an approximately 600 meter high hill. Being close to the sea, the southern exposure and the protection of the hill, the municipality has a relatively mild climate.

The place consists of several, sometimes ancient settlements, that are separated by a short distance. The scattered housing estates have been linked in recent history by new buildings and inserted into a homogeneous townscape. Nevertheless, there is a variety of more ancient settlement nuclei in the periphery of the community. These include Conio in the East, Case sopranos and Barbarasa in the north and Belli and Furnu in the south.

West of the Torre dei Panei, a watchtower from the 16th century, lies the estate of Costa Panera, which was abandoned after the devastating earthquake of 1831 and since then has been uninhabited.

Pompeiana belongs to the Comunità Montana Argentina Armea and is approximately 22 kilometers from the provincial capital of Imperia.

According to the Italian classifications for seismic activity, the community of Zone 2 has been assigned. This means that Pompeiana is in a seismically active zone moderate to strong.

History

Although the name of the village probably derives from the Roman fundus Pompeiana, there are no documents from the period before the eleventh century, which prove the existence of the place in the first millennium. The river, which now called Santa Caterina, as di fossato Pompeiana ( German: digging Pompeiana ) documented because it served to limit the country, the Adelaide di Susa ceded to the Benedictine monks of Santo Stefano di Genova. This donation was the foundation for the formation of the so-called Principato di Villaregia to the Pompeiana not initially belonged, although certainly still exercised the Benedictine their influence. From 1153 to the Bishop of Albenga received a tithe of the income which afforded the country, including those from Pompeiana.

Pompeiana came in 1225 under the jurisdiction of the Benedictines of the Principality Villaregia and remained there until 1335, when the Benedictine sold the Principality of Lamba Doria because of numerous debts.

Between the years 1440 and 1798 Pompeiana in Pompiana Superior ( or Maior ) and Pompiana Inferior has been disconnected. The upper part fell under the feudal lords of the Quaranta, the lower village was part of the Podesteria di Taggia. 1472 were the rights to Pompiana Maior to the Genoese Marquis Spinola.

On May 22, 1557 25 people were in a pirate attack captured, 7 or 8 were killed, as well as several workhorses. The pirates plundered and pillaged and the surrounding area were also devastated in further raids at that time.

The establishment of a public school, which was open to all children in the community, it is clear from a document dated 9 March 1704.

Climate

The municipality is classified under climate category D, as the number of degree days has a value of 1566. This means that in Italy legally regulated heating season is between November 1 and April 15 for 12 hours per day.
