Poncho Sanchez

Poncho Sanchez ( born October 30, 1951 in Laredo, Texas) is an American Latin jazz musician, salsa singer, bandleader and conga player ( Conguero ). His ensemble won at the Grammy Awards 2000 Price Best Latin Jazz Album ( published by Concord Picante ) for Latin Soul.

Sanchez has performed with many jazz greats such as Cal Tjader, Mongo Santamaría, Hugh Masekela, Clare Fischer and Tower of Power. He is regarded as a major percussionist America.

Sanchez is the youngest of seven children and grew up in Norwalk ( California). He first learned to play the guitar and later came to singing. In addition, he taught self-taught in the flutes, percussion and Timbalesspiel. The congas were the main instrument in his youth.

In 1975, at the age of 23, he was invited by vibraphonist Cal Tjader, play along with the band. Sanchez played in the band until 1982 as Conguero.

Poncho Sanchez has moved a total of 19 albums from Concord.
