Ponoy River

The Ponoi (Russian Поной, formerly Trianæma ) is a 426 km long river in the east of the Kola Peninsula in the Murmansk Oblast in Russia. Its catchment area is 15,500 km ².

Geography

The source of the Ponoi located in the southwest of the Keiwy - Highlands about 50 km east of Lake Lovozero in the center of the Kola Peninsula. The river flows in an easterly direction a landscape of hills and swampy plains. The Ponoi absorbs the water coming from the north several tributaries, the largest of these is the Atscherjok.

Below the mouth of the Purnatsch in the Ponoi, about 50 km from the sea, the river Ponoi changes its character. It now flows through canyons and forms rapids. Finally, it reaches its estuary south of Cape Korabelni in the extreme east of Kola in the White Sea.

The river freezes between late October and early November, and remains until the first half of May frozen.

Fauna

The river is rich in Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar). He is very popular with European tourists Angel.
