Pont-l'Abbé-d'Arnoult

Pont- l'Abbé - d'Arnoult is a municipality with 1724 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in France, in the department of Charente -Maritime, in the Poitou -Charentes.

Geography

It is located approximately 23 kilometers northwest of Saintes and 15 kilometers south of Rochefort, on the river Arnoult, who channeled from here under the name Canal de Pont l'Abbé - runs further.

History

  • In ancient times the sea reached until after Pontum labium (lat. literally: sea lip ), as the place was then called.
  • In the 12th century a priory was founded in Pont- l'Abbé - d'Arnoult than Tochterpriorat the Abbaye aux Dames, from the near Saintes, which are placed under the care of the mother abbey was richly endowed with lucrative lands. The priory was one of those of Margaret of Angoulême, sister of the French king Francis I. The priories claimed all feudal rights charges (taxes, fees, tithes ), and in return they were responsible for the administration and for action to defend.
  • During the religious wars of the 16th century, the monastery was set on fire. After that, it was restored and remodeled in the 17th century.
  • In the French Revolution, the priory was sold as national property for demolition by the population.
