On 30 June 2011, the city had 4575 inhabitants ² on an area of 27.5 km.

In blue with a silver sun face and red lips and golden straight and flamed rays. About the shield a silver four-towered mural crown. In the white band at the sign foot of the place name in black letters " PONTA DO SOL ".
History
After the uninhabited island of Madeira was colonized from 1420 by the Portuguese, was born about 1425 from the Ponta do Sol. From about 1440 the lucrative sugar cane cultivation was operated intensively here. 1501 was the seat of a site 's own circle.
Culture and sights
Ponta do Sol is the beginning of December to the internationally renowned festival for digital music and sound art MADEIRADIG and the Micro Film Festival MMiFF.
Some historic public buildings, a number of agricultural manors, and a variety of religious buildings stand in a circle under monument protection, including built in the 16th century main church Igreja Matriz de Ponta do Sol, after their patron also Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz (English: Church Our Lady of Light). The historic center is also a listed building as a whole.
