In the circle of life 12,027 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011).

Geography

On the left side of the Rio Lima located, the place 72 km north of the city of Porto and 40 km east of the district capital of Viana do Castelo is removed.

History

Various finds and excavations indicate a prehistoric settlement, including the remains of dolmens and hill forts of the Castro culture. 1979 were also discovered in the municipality Lindoso rock engravings.

After the conquest of 137 BC, Decimus Junius Brutus Callaicus the territory became Roman. From that time, coins, pottery and sculptures were found, and a bridge has been preserved. Known as Anobrega Roman administration area had stock as Terra de Nóbrega to the Middle Ages. Theresa of Castile gave him 1125 first city rights ( Foral ).

In the years (from 1139 ) to the independence of the Kingdom of Portugal also pilgrims were augmented by on the way to Santiago de Compostela. Every year on the last weekend in July, is in place with the Festival Folk Celta de Ponte da Barca a music festival for Celtic inspired music instead, which is accompanied by an alternative market, including with international folk dance performances, booths, and acupuncture, yoga, reiki and massage services. Among the musicians announced in 2013 include the Irish violinist Niamh Ni Charra and the pianist and bagpipes player Cristina Pato from Galicia.

Economy

The circle is dominated by agriculture, livestock farming is one of the focal points. Is known of the local wine, in particular the Vinho Verde.
