Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (Spanish: Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú ) is a university in Lima, Peru. She was the first private university in Peru.

History

The University was founded on March 18, 1917 by RP Jorge Dintilhac founded, was at this time but only the title " Catholic University " ( the title " Pontifical University ", she received only in 1942 ). The first two faculties were for the Humanities ( Letras ) and of Law ( Jurisprudencia ). In 1933 were added the Faculty of Engineering ( Ingeniería ) and of Political and Economic Science ( Ciencias y Politicas Económicas ).

In the following years some institutions have been established within the university, such as In 1935, the School of Education, 1939, the Catholic Academy of Art by Adolfo Winternitz - from in the 80s, the Faculty of Arts (Arte ) emerged - and 1945, the School of Journalism. In 1947, the then Department of Education ( Educación ) was founded. In the 50s, more institutions were founded and in 1964 was added in another faculty, for the Social Sciences ( Ciencias Sociales ). In 1998, the Faculty of Communication Sciences was added ( Ciencias y Artes de la Comunicación ) and then in 2002 for the architecture.

Because of unauthorized modification of the statutes and impairment of ecclesiastical interests of the Vatican the university has denied the title " Pontifical Catholic University " in July 2012. Dispute there was previously to personnel issues, course content and real estate transactions. However, the University holds the title to continue with the explanation " Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú " was a Peruvian institution. She is registered as a civil company based in Peru and thus subject to Peruvian and not canon law.

  • Faculty of Management ( Gestión y Alta Dirección )

Among the numerous honorary doctors ( doctors of Honoris Causa ) of the University also includes the former Pope Benedict XVI. , Which in 1986 received an honorary doctorate at the time under his real name Joseph Ratzinger.
