Pontotoc County (Oklahoma)

Pontotoc County is a county located in the state of Oklahoma in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ada.

Geography

The County is located in south-central Oklahoma and has an area of 1879 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Seminole County, Hughes County, Coal County, Johnston County, Murray County, Garvin County and McClain County.

History

Pontotoc County was formed on 16 July 1907 as original county of Chickasaw country. It was named after a Native American word of the Chickasaw.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Pontotoc County 35 143 people in 13,978 households and 9,421 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer.
