Pontus (mythology)

Pontus (Greek Πόντος, the sea ) was in Greek mythology, an ancient sea deity, son of Gaia.

Pontos is counted among the Protogonoi, the first -born. This makes it a präolympischer God. According to Hesiod gave birth to Gaia, the earth, it " without fruitful love." According to others, he was the son of Gaia and of the ether. With Gaia begat Nereus, Thaumas, Phorkys, keto and Eurybia and Telchines. With Thalassa he was father of the fish.
