Poopó Lake

The Poopó Lake is an approximately 1340 km ² large salt lake in the Andes in Bolivia ( South America).

The still waters, the south-east of Lake Titicaca roughly 50 km south of Oruro is located at 3686 m altitude in a endorheic basins of the Andes, is fed from the Rio Desaguadero, the outflow of Lake Titicaca. Lack of water supply, the lake was completely dried up in 1994. The average depth of the lake is only 3 m.

The Poopó lake emerged ² Tauca Lake from the 43,000 kms around 10,000 years ago, a Glazialgewässer, which included the three sub-basins of today Poopo Lake, the Coipasa Salt Lake and the Salar de Uyuni and a water depth of up to 60 meters had.

The strong muddy waters of the Poopó lake is habitat for flamingos.
