Pootle

Pootle is a program written in Python Free online translation and management tool. Pootle was developed in 2004 and published by Translate.org.za and partners. Later, it was further developed as part of the Word Forge project and is now managed on Sourceforge.

Pootle is a web- server solution to support translations for software development. His focus is primarily on the localization of software. It uses the Translate Toolkit to edit the files to be translated. Its main functionalities are part of a translation memory, glossary management, as well as modules for objective and user management.

Pootle can serve different purposes in the translation process. For example, it may simply display only the translation statistics on a server. With the help of his proposal functionality user can submit translation and proofreading proposals, so that it can be used as a sort of issue tracking system for the translation.

Pootle allowed the assignment of individual translation projects and / or speech files of a project to specific users. The offline work is supported by export, import and balance functions, so that with other tools (eg Poedit, Lokalize etc. ) can be used simultaneously.

History

The first publication appeared in December 2004, after it had been developed by David Fraser of the Translate.org.za community in a project supported by CATIA and St James software project. Even before that came Pootle in various translation teams Translate.org.za in South Africa for use.

The name Pootle is a ( a figure of the BBC children's series "The Flumps " borrowed ) acronym for PO -based Online Translation / Localization Engine ( German: PO -based Online Translation / localization tool ).

From 2006 Pootle was further developed as part of the Word Forge project, which in turn was supported by the Open Society Institute and the Canadian International Development Research Centre. Here, the XLIFF file management, and infrastructure for mapping workflows for translation has been added.

Since version 2 Pootle is based on the Django framework.

Pootle, for example, of OpenOffice.org, TYPO3, One Laptop per Child and many other projects used .. Pootle is the basis of Verbatim Project, which developed the infrastructure for localization of the Mozilla projects.

Features

The Pootle server directly accesses files in the Gettext PO or XLIFF format to edit the data to be translated. The texts can be indexed for fast search. The web-based Pootle editor allows to translate an Internet connection. The editor is available in 55 languages ​​, both the user interface and the editing window can handle bidirectional text.
