Popasna
Popasna (Ukrainian Попасна; Russian Попасная / Popasnaja ) is a city in the Luhansk Oblast in eastern Ukraine with 21,257 inhabitants ( 2013).
Geographical location
Located in the Donets Basin city is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons few kilometers west of Perwomajsk and 85 km west of the Oblastzentrum Luhansk.
History
Popasna was founded on the railway line to Debalzewe and Kramatorsk as a railway station in 1878. Since 1910, the place is a big railway junction, which received city status on 24 October 1938. With elevation to the city the place got the name LM Kahanowytscha in honor of the Soviet politician LM Kaganovich. Since 1943, the city again bears the name Popasna.

Popasna is the administrative center of the homonymous 1325 km ² large Rajons. The Rajon Popasna is located in the western part of the Luhansk Oblast on the border of Donetsk Oblast.
It has 40,946 inhabitants ( September 2012 ) and a population density of 31 inhabitants per km ².
