Pope Anterus

The Holy Anterus (? Also Anteros, * in Greece, † January 3, 236 in Rome ) was the Bishop of Rome and as such is the successor of Pontian, who was deported along with the antipope Hippolytus order of the Emperor Maximinus Thrax to Sardinia. Its name is a Latinization of the Greek god of unrequited love Anteros.

Anterus was elected after seven days Sedisvakanz on 21 November 235. About events during his short pontificate, which lasted only a few weeks, nothing definite has been handed down. He is considered the first historically backed incumbent. According to the Liber Pontificalis was built around 530, he is said to have collected Acts of the Martyrs, for which he was punished with death. The death of a martyr, which also led to the canonization is not historically verifiable. He was buried in St. Callistus catacombs in Rome. The grave was rediscovered in 1854.
