Pope Benedict VII

Benedict VII (* in Rome, † July 10 983 in Rome) was Pope from 974 to 983 He was the son Deodats the grandson of Alberic II of Spoleto and nephew of John XII. He became the fourth Pope of the family of the Counts of Tusculum. His name means the blessed (Latin ).

Benedict was bishop of Sutri and was the successor to the 974 murdered by the anti-pope Boniface VII Benedict VI. He was elected at the behest of Otto II, had fled from the Boniface VII to Byzantium. Benedict promoted the reform of the church and the evangelization of the Slavs. Influenced by the Cluny monastery, he carried out this reform within the church and condemned simony, among others.
