Pope Clement X

Clement X (* July 13, 1590 in Rome, † July 22, 1676 ibid ), civil Emilio Altieri, was Pope from 1670 to 1676 the Catholic Church.

Emilio Altieri was born in an ancient Roman patrician family. In 1611 he earned the title of Dr. jur. in Rome and worked for a time as a lawyer. Influenced by Ludovico Ludovisi, he suggested after ordination in 1624 a curial career.

From 1627 to 1666 he was Bishop of Camerino. Since 1667, he was papal nuncio in Naples. On December 3, 1669, he was named Pope Clement IX. cardinal (hence the choice of name ).

After long and serious party struggles of the Cardinals, he was elected on April 29, 1670 the new pope in the conclave. Due to his age of 80, he was already the most cardinals as a compromise candidate right. However, to the disappointment of most cardinals Clement X proved to be quite vital for his age. However, the current state affairs, he left immediately after the election an adoptive nephew, Cardinal Paluzzi Altieri degli Albertoni Paluzzo.

Clement X died after many contemporaries surprisingly long pontificate of six years in Rome, his tomb is located at an important point, the right of the apse of St. Peter's Basilica.
