The Pope County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 4470 inhabitants and a population density of 4.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Golconda

Geography

The County is located in southern Illinois on the Ohio River, which forms the border with Kentucky. It has an area of 970 square kilometers, of which ten square kilometers of water surface. At the Pope County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Pope County was formed on January 10, 1816 from the Gallatin County and Johnson County. It was named after Nathaniel Pope (1784-1850), the first secretary of the Illinois Territory ( 1809-1816 ) and the last territorial delegate in Congress from Illinois.

The first settlers were Scots and Irish, then came mainly German immigrants in the area. 1839, the eastern part of Pope County was separated, resulting in the Hardin County was formed. Golconda, the seat of county government, was founded in 1797, but under the name Sahrahsville, by Sarah Lusk, daughter of a senator from Virginia and widow of Major Lusk, who was here in 1797 built the first ferry and put into operation. Sarah Lusk got the license in 1804 for continued operation of the ferry and was the first woman in America who received such a license. The first courthouse in 1820 and completed in 1873, still operating.

According to the census in 2010 lived in Pope County 4470 people in 1751 households. The population density was 4.7 people per square kilometer. In the 1751 households lived statistically 2.19 per person.

The racial the population was composed of 91.7 percent white, 6.0 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.2 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 0.9 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity were 1.4 percent of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

18.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.2 percent were between 18 and 64 and 21.6 percent were 65 years or older. 47.3 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was $ 37,177. The per capita income was $ 19,681. 18.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
