Pope Cyril VI of Alexandria

Kirellos VI. ( Cyril VI,. Born August 12, 1902 in Damanhur, Egypt, as Azar Youssef Atta, † March 9, 1971 ) was the 116th Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of the chair of St. Mark ( Coptic Church ).

Life

On July 27, 1927, he entered the monastery Baramous, where he met the monk ordination was named Mina Al Baramousy 1928. The monk ordination took place on 18 July 1931. In 1932 he became a hermit and wandered from the monastery to the cave of Amba Sarabamon, where he was Pope Yoannis XIX. 1934 visited.

In 1936, he left his hermit cave and went to Old Cairo near the mountains Mokadamm and rented there, the so-called mill. From 1942 he served in the Church Aba Kir and John. In 1944 he was called to the monastery Anba Samuel to make it to restructure. On his initiative and with his employees was built in 1947, the Church of St. Mina in Old Cairo.

On May 10, 1959 monk Father Mina was under the name Kirellos VI. ordained a Patriarch of Alexandria. In 1959 he inaugurated a Patriarch of Ethiopia. Twice, in 1960 and 1965 he visited Ethiopia. In 1965 he laid the foundation for the great Mark's Cathedral in Cairo. At its opening in 1968, the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist from Italy was brought back to Egypt to his initiative. The Monastery of St. Mina he let rebuild. He began by an elaborate program with visits to various villages and dioceses, where he was received with great enthusiasm and interest of many residents. He led the revival in the Coptic Orthodox Church, which brought many communities and churches to keep a very pious life. He supported many modern developments in the church. He followed an extremely hard ascetic discipline that consists of guards, fasting and prayers.

During his tenure, the appearance of the Virgin Mary in Zeitoun fell on April 2, 1968.

Kirellos VI. died on Tuesday, March 9, 1971 at the age of 69 years (11 years and 9 months as patriarch ). At first he was buried in the New Cathedral to Cairo. On November 25, 1972, his body, as desired by him during his lifetime, brought to the monastery of St. Mina.
