Pope Gregory II

Gregory II (* 669 in Rome, † February 11 731 ibid ) was Pope from 715 to 731 He was the son of Marcellus from the family of Savelli.

He was born 669 in Rome. Under Pope Sergius I., he was papal librarian, on 19 May 715 he became pope.

Significantly it is the fact that he commissioned 719 Boniface with the missionary work in Germany. 722 he appointed him bishop. He also stressed in a letter to Charles Martel, which he gave Boniface, the good relations between Rome and the Franks. With Byzantium there were strong arguments in this time due to high tribute from the emperor.

On February 11, 731 Gregory II died in Rome. He is venerated as a saint. His liturgical feast day is in the Roman Martyrology February 13.
